Badami , Karnataka

         The Sixth century C.E is an Important Period in the history of South India .At a Time when there were number of Kingdoms fighting for Supremacy. The Chalukyas emerged Triumphant after defeating Early Rashtrakutas.  

        The Chalukyas of Badami were eventually successful in uniting major parts of South india between Two seas. Their metropolis was Vatapi, a City of Pauranic antiquity,Now known as Badami,in Bijapur district of Karnataka in India.

        Badami is well known for its great history and architecture. There are plenty of ancient temples, forts, and historical places to visit in Badami. This most significant landscape is once regarded as the ancient capital of the early Chalukya kingdom.

           Badami

           Badami, located in the northern part of Karnataka.The Badami caves are carved out of the red hills near Agastya lake in Badami. The caves are dedicated to Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Jainism.

 

Badami caves see travellers flocking the site to look at the exquisite carvings and sculptures. The walls, pillars, and ceilings in the cave are covered with popular tales of gods, mythical creatures, and visual puns. Created by the Chalukyas in the 7th century AD, Badami caves are considered to be one of the earliest examples of Indian rock-cut architecture.

                 Pattadakkal

       Pattadakal is located in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka.Pattadakal represents the pinnacle of Chalukyan temple architecture. This was the sacred site where the Chalukyan kings were crowned, and many of the temples were built here to commemorate victories.

       Interestingly, most of the temples here were commissioned by the queens, to thank the Gods for their husband’s triumphant return from battle. Most of the temples at Pattadakal were built between the 7th and 9th centuries, and show a variety of Indian architectural styles.
 

 

Aihole 01

            Aihole

      Aihole situated on the bank of river Malaprabhā in the Bijapur district of Karnataka State. It is famous for the large number of stone temples built in and around this village.They belong to the period 500-650 A.D. and were built by the Chalukyas  (500-757 A.D.).

    ‘Golden Triangle’ of North Karnataka covering Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal.Chalukyas were exponents of early architectural achievements in Deccan. Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal were their centers of art. They were succeeded by the Rashtrakutas and the Kalyani Chalukyas.

  Mahadeva Temple,Itagi

         The Mahadeva temple is located in Itagi     (also spelled Ittagi) in Koppal district,Karnataka.

The Temple was built in112 CE by Mahadeva,a commander (dandanayaka) in the army of the Western Chalukya King Vikramaditya VI.

         The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

 The temple    has well-executed sculptures, finely crafted carvings on walls and pillars.An inscription dated 1112 CE in the temple calls it "Emperor among Temples" ( Devalaya Chakravarti ).

This temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

 Trikuteshwara Temple,
              Gadag

     Trikuteshwara Temple is located in Gadag in North Karnataka, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was built between 1050 and 1200 by Chalukyas.The main shrine has three Lingas, representing triMurthis, Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu.

  The other shrine is dedicated to Goddess of Learning, Saraswathi. Beautifully carved walls and pillars, wall panels with beautifully sculpted figures and stonework screens make the temple very attractive.This temple architecture was planned by the great architect Amara Shilpi Jakanachari.
